Located 10 miles off the Southwest coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, Ramea is a beautiful island community of 500 residents with a 200-year history of seafood processing that dates to the early days of flake-dried, salted cod. Completely inaccessible by road, our unique cultural and geographical placement is a source of local pride. Labrador Gem Seafoods is committed to preserving our island ways of life. The waters from which we harvest (NAFO Division 3Ps) are some of the most prolific fishing grounds in the world. Swarming with life, the local varieties of shellfish, groundfish and pelagics make Ramea a choice location for sustainable and productive seafood processing.
Raema Island used to have one of the largest cod fisheries in Newfoundland but after the cod moratorium in 1992 it almost shut down and the town came close to collapsing. But when owner & operator Danny came in and took the plant over, they started focusing on sustainable and unique seafood offerings, which they've been offering for the last 20 years.
Their half-shell scallops are delicious, extremely easy to cook with, are incredibly versatile, and Labrador Gem is the only one producer in Canada selling this SKU!
